Waiting list approval is REQUIRED to potentially bring home a puppy from Bellator Basenjis. Waiting lists are formed before puppies are born and start with the questionnaire on the contact us page. The second part of our approval process is an in person meeting at our home BEFORE we have puppies.

Basenjis, as a primitive breed, generally only have one heat cycle per year, and it’s usually in the fall with most puppies born late fall into early winter. This is unlike most domesticated dogs which cycle twice a year, and is more like wild dogs such as wolves and coyotes. This ultimately means basenji puppies are only available one time a year! Often getting on a waiting list is the only way to ensure you’ll bring home a puppy.
Our girls generally cycle in September or October, but we will update our Facebook Page as things progress.

All puppies from Bellator Basenjis are sold with age appropriate and necessary genetic DNA testing completed on each individual when applicable (PRA/Fanconi), CERF Eye Exams performed by a Canine Ophthalmologist, ISO Micro-chipping with prepaid lifetime enrollment through AKC Reunite, up to date on vaccines (Distemper/Parvovirus), and a written conditional health guarantee and contract as well as prepaid AKC registration and one month free pet insurance.
Bellator dogs and puppies live and are raised as members of our family, in our home, and generally right under our feet! Our puppies are raised using the Puppy Culture Protocols and receive early socialization and stimulation while learning positive behaviors, training, and skills. Our pups remain part of our family even after they leave for their new homes and we strongly encourage new owners to keep in touch and update us. Any pup placed by us here at Bellator will always have a home with us and can be returned at any time, for any reason. Since we are the breeder, and chose to bring this puppy into the world, we feel responsible for the puppy for its entire life, and would never want it taken to a shelter or rescue; the pups safety and well being is our primary concern.
Our waiting list fills up VERY quickly, so if you’re interested in getting a puppy, we recommend contacting us the sooner the better and going through the process of being on our approved waiting list. The first step of our approval process is the questionnaire on the “Contact Us” page, and the second part is an in-person meeting.
After breeding, puppies are born 63 days or nine weeks later and our pups will be ready to go to their new homes at 12 weeks of age which will encompass two of the critical fear periods for puppies. We encourage anyone interested in basenjis, especially our puppies, to contact us and arrange a time to visit and meet up with our dogs and us. For safety purposes we generally do not allow visitors one week prior to delivery and until the puppies are three weeks old. We like to foster an ongoing relationship with potential puppy buyers and continue that long after the puppies leave for their new homes. We offer lifetime breeder support and welcome any questions from our puppy people. The best way to start this is for everyone to meet; we meet you, and you meet us and our dogs. For the “I’ve never owned a basenji before” people, this is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the breed as well! Once everyone is in agreement that a basenji is right for your family you will be placed on our waiting list and will at the very least receive an update when breeding occurs and when puppies are born. After puppies are born, we do require a deposit be placed to ensure you receive a puppy. We only accept a limited number of deposits based on the number of puppies in the litter and the probability of one or two staying with us at Bellator. Deposits are also non refundable since it is essentially a commitment from you to purchase one of our puppies, therefore any other potential buyers will be turned away and referred to other breeders that may have puppies. Deposits are only accepted once we have puppies born and do not guarantee the purchase of a specific puppy.
Once the puppies are three weeks old we encourage you to visit as often as schedules permit. This allows you (and your family) to watch the puppies grow and develop and you can also learn their routine and assist with puppy socialization! We allow our puppies to leave at 12 weeks of age, but we do not make our “show keeper” picks until 8-9 weeks of age. The 8-9 week evaluation is the most determinate of show quality, and since we breed to carry on our lines and to show our puppies, we will not take any reservations or deposits on specific puppies until we have made our show picks. We will definitely take your desire for a certain puppy into consideration, but please know, before we make our picks, that there is no guarantee that will be the pup you ultimately get, but we do our best to make sure everyone is happy! After the show evaluations, we will give you our best observations on the puppy’s temperaments and characteristics and assist you with picking the puppy that will be best suited for you and your household.
