Rescue

Here at Bellator we FIRMLY believe that adding a pet to your home should be your choice and where that pet comes from should be solely your choice based on educating yourself and determining what would be best for you, your household, and the potential four legged addition.  No one should ever be made to feel guilty or coerced into any pet ownership, whether from a breeder or a rescue; the choice is and should always be yours.  Although we at Bellator work to ensure none of our dogs ever end up in a rescue or shelter situation, we fully support and assist where we can the efforts of basenji rescues.

If you’re interested in finding a rescue basenji, there are several wonderful Basenji Rescues available all across the USA.  If purchasing a basenji or raising a puppy isn’t for you, perhaps rescuing a basenji that needs a new home would fit more into your lifestyle.  The rescues tirelessly screen each dog and perspective adopter to ensure the best match is made for each person and dog.  Don’t get discouraged if you’re denied a particular dog; many basenjis in rescue have certain needs and requirements that have to be met or in place for that dog to have a happy home.  Unfortunately many of these dogs have unknown histories, are pulled from shelters as runaways or drop offs, or are owner surrenders for a multitude of reasons.  These basenjis may have not had the greatest beginning of their lives and it’s the rescue’s mission to ensure that the remainder of their life is happy and secure.  If you have the time, patience, and dedication to adopt a rescue basenji, I urge you to check out these awesome rescues!  Also, don’t worry if the dog you’re looking at isn’t close to you; if your adoption application is approved, a large network of volunteers and transporters will often band together to ensure the basenji is transported as close to your location as possible!  Click on each name to go to their respective websites.

Although not our primary focus, Bellator Basenjis will help with rescue Basenjis and will help you rehome your basenji or take your basenji and have them live with us while we find them a new home.  All puppies sold by Bellator Basenjis are required to come back to us if they cannot stay in the homes we sold them to, but we are willing to take puppies and adult dogs that are not even from Bellator just to help a basenji in need.  If you need to find your basenji a new home, please contact us or one of the rescue groups listed above!

This is sweet little Mea who is a purebred dark brindle basenji that we helped place as a 6 month old rescue pup.  She is WELL loved by her new family the Martins!  Mea was the result of two 10 month old family pets who were purchased from a puppy mill breeding together in the family’s home.  She was born to a mother who had just turned one year old a week prior to giving birth.  Unfortunately her basenji dad passed away at 11 months old from a urethra blockage due to complications from cystinuria, a common disease in basenjis and manageable with proper education and diet.  Tragedies like that are why you should ONLY purchase puppies from reputable breeders or through reputable rescue groups.

Mea was lucky…but not all stories have such happy endings.
